Eligibility to play for NZ

Baseball New Zealand recognises that there is an increasing number of New Zealand players based overseas that fit within two possible categories:

  1. National Pathway & Performance Players from NZ who have moved into international baseball programs  -  College or Leagues
  2. Players around the World who are eligible to play for NZ through parentage or being born here in NZ

We aim to keep players from NZ or those interested in representing NZ, from around the world, connected to our organisation, our national player pathway and baseball system in NZ, whilst also acknowledging that player development is occurring within the international systems a player may be connected with, while outside of New Zealand and our Baseball NZ player pathway.

You should hold a New Zealand passport to be eligible to play for New Zealand.

To represent NZ at various baseball events the criteria may vary slightly:

  • To represent NZ at a World Baseball Softball Confederation (WBSC) qualifying event, Olympic qualifying or World Cup tournament, you must hold a current New Zealand passport.
  • To play for the New Zealand Men's Diamondblacks at a World Baseball Classic (WBC) tournament (qualifying or final), you must have proof of New Zealand residency or parentage.

We welcome contact from any players who are currently based overseas and have an interest in being considered for inclusion in Baseball NZ's national squads and/or performance programmes.

Are you:
