nzlwbcpitcherssmlNew Zealand name final 28-man roster for upcoming World Baseball Classic Qualifier

New Zealand Diamondblacks manager Andy Skeels and his coaching staff made their final selections for the 28-player roster for the team's participation in the World Baseball Classic qualifiers in Taipei beginning on 15th November, selecting three Auckland-based players in a difficult final day of roster cuts.

Skeels selected two pitchers, big right-hander Yong Min (John) Lee, and young southpaw Makauley Fox, one of New Zealand Baseball's most promising pitching prospects in the programme's history, who most recently competed in Major League Baseball's Australian Academy on the Gold Coast.

Lee's addition complements an existing handful of Howick Pakuranga Baseball Club players who have made New Zealand's best ever national baseball team, bringing three effective pitches and recent training in his native Korea with him to the ball club.

The final selection was Maclean's College old boy and Howick Pakuranga Baseball Club utility ballplayer Dan Tan, who brings speed and a comprehensive knowledge of the game to the team.

Skeels remarked at the conclusion of the Diamondblacks' Auckland camp that, though the selection process was difficult, he and his staff chose a roster with a strong blend of youth and experience, as well as speed and power.

The team had their first training in New Taipei City today and will open against the host nation, Chinese Taipei, currently ranked 8th in the world, on the 15th at 6:30 pm local time, and televised LIVE on SKY Television at 11:30 pm this Thursday night.
